About Eva's Initiatives:

Eva’s Initiatives for Homeless Youth is a 3-star charity with an above-average results reporting grade of A-. For every dollar donated, 45 cents are available to go towards the cause. Its reserve funds can cover just 5 months of annual program costs.

Founded in 1989, Eva’s Initiatives for Homeless Youth (Eva’s) provides emergency shelter, long-term transitional housing support, and job training programs for Torontonian youths between the ages of 16 and 24. The charity particularly focuses on the unique needs and challenges of Black homeless youth. It reports that while Black individuals represent only 9.5% of the general population of Toronto, they make up 43% of Toronto youth experiencing homelessness. In fiscal 2024 (year ended September), Eva’s spent $9.2m on its three programs: Shelter Services, Youth Programs, and YOUth Belong.

In F2024, Shelter Services was 61% of annual program spending. Eva’s operates four sites in Toronto that offer shelter and transitional housing for young people experiencing homelessness. In F2024, Eva’s emergency shelter served 304 youths who stayed for an average length of five months. Eva’s transitional shelter program served 120 youths in F2024.

In F2024, Youth Programs was 22% of annual program spending. This involves employment and education training, and health and well-being support. In F2024, 156 Black youths received support from a psychiatrist and more than 250 youths were engaged in workshops and information sessions.

In F2024, YOUth Belong was 17% of annual program spending. YOUth Belong is a community housing program specifically for Black youth. In F2024, the charity provided 65 youths with up to $800 in rental support.

Results and Impact

In F2024, Eva’s Initiatives conducted a survey on its Youth Programs. The results were as follows:

75% of youths surveyed reported improved complex problem-solving skills.

82% of youths surveyed reported improved financial literacy skills.

78% of print shop program graduates are employed after completing the program.

In F2024, Eva’s Initiatives provided 304 youths with emergency shelter and transitioned 139 youths into permanent housing. The charity also reports that 30% of youths at Eva’s are employed at a 14% year over year increase.

Administrative costs are 19% of total revenues (less investment income) and fundraising costs are 36% of total donations. For every dollar donated, 45 cents are available to go towards the cause.
