Founded in 1990, Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta (HFHSA) is affiliated with Habitat for Humanity Canada and it runs the Habitat Homeownership program in Southern Alberta. It provides affordable housing ownership to low income families in Brooks, Calgary, Foothills, Medicine Hat, and Mountain View. HFHSA says over 4,000 people in Calgary are on waitlists for social housing. It spent $9.1m on its program in 2024.
Homeownership is HFHSA’s sole program. To be eligible for a home: families must have a minimum annual income of $40k (maximum depends on family size); families must have children under 18; families must not be able to qualify for a regular mortgage; and families must volunteer 500 hours through HFHSA’s programs. Families buy their Habitat home with no down payment or interest, and monthly payments are capped at 30% of their income.
HFHSA operates ReStore, a business that sells new or lightly used donated building materials and furniture. The charity reports that its ReStores diverted over 3,400 tonnes of waste in 2024.
