Finances

Street Haven’s financial statements follow line-item costing, meaning it does not clearly report which expenses relate to program, administrative, and fundraising activities. This is not a best practice. The charity’s T3010 filings with the CRA do not disclose total spending on administrative and fundraising costs. Ci took the best estimate of these costs based on the financial statements; however, the main line item, salaries and benefits, has been fully allocated to program costs, thus overhead costs are likely understated.

In F2024, Street Haven received $1.2m in donations, up 74% from the $699k received in F2023. In F2024, the charity also received $4.6m in government funding, which represents 74% of total revenues. Administrative costs are 9% of total revenues (less investment income) and fundraising costs are 3% of total donations. For every dollar raised, 88 cents are available to go towards the cause. This is within Ci’s reasonable range for overhead spending.

In F2024, Street Haven spent $4.6m on its programs which represents 74% of total revenues. Street Haven has $6.9m in its reserve funds. These funds can cover one year and six months of annual program costs.

Note: DEFERRED REVENUE: To report on a cash-basis, Ci adjusted for both governmental and non-governmental sources of deferred revenue. This affected total revenues by ($59k) in F2024, $246k in F2023, and ($97k) in F2022. GRANTS RECEIVABLE: Ci adjusted for the change in government grants and rebates receivable. This affected total revenues by $5k in F2024, $107k in F2023, and ($64k) in F2022. LINE-ITEM COSTING: In F2022, Ci used the charity’s T3010 filings with the CRA to report administrative and fundraising costs. Street Haven’s F2023 and F2024 T3010 filings did not disclose this breakdown so Ci used its best discretion to allocate the expenses between program, administrative, and fundraising costs.
