Finances
Kidney Foundation of Canada’s audited financial statements follow activity-based costing, a best practice. Its expenses are clearly defined between program, administrative, and fundraising categories.
In 2024 KFOC received $31.9m in donations. Administrative costs are 15% of revenues (excluding investment income). Fundraising costs are 49% of donations. This results in total overhead spending of 64%. For every dollar donated, 36 cents are available to go to the cause. This falls outside Ci’s reasonable range for overhead spending.
In 2024 KFOC spent $14.4m on its programs, which is 41% of its revenue. In 2024 it had a surplus of $74k.
KFOC has $28.4m in reserve funds (cash and investments). Excluding $5.3m in donor-endowed funds, the net funding reserves can cover 164%, or just under one year and eight months of program costs.
Kidney Foundation was featured in October 2024's CTV's W5 investigation into second-hand clothing bins where Canadians donate their used clothes to help charity. Kidney Foundation's donated clothing operations are held in a separate organization, Canadian Kidney Trustee Corporation. In 2024, Kidney Foundation Trust sold donated clothes for $4.5 million that were valued at $4.1 million. The surplus (profit) of $394k ($210k in 2023) goes to the charity, Kidney Foundation. This surplus/profit is 9% (5% in 2023) of the proceeds for donated clothes sales. This surplus is included in Kidney Foundation's net business activities.
This charity report is an update that has been sent for review to Kidney Foundation of Canada. Changes and edits may be forthcoming.
