OVERVIEW

About Kidney Foundation of Canada:

Kidney Foundation of Canada is a financially transparent 3-star charity. It has an average results reporting grade and can cover its program costs for just under one year and eight months. Its overhead spending is outside Ci's reasonable range.

Founded in 1964, Kidney Foundation of Canada (KFOC) works to improve the quality of life of people affected by kidney disease. The charity reports that 4.1 million Canadians have or are at risk of kidney disease. KFOC runs three main programs: Patient Services, Research, and Awareness. Charity Intelligence calculates KFOC spent $14.4m on its programs in 2024.

The Patient Services program received 38% ($5.4m) of program spending in 2024. KFOC offers financial support, referrals, and peer support services. The Research program received 37% ($5.4m) of program spending in 2024. KFOC funds research related to kidney disease across Canada. The charity provided 102 research grants to 499 researchers in 2024. Included in the grants are 59 Kidney Health Research grants, 11 Allied Health awards, and 26 KRESCENT awards. The Awareness program received 25% ($3.6m) of program spending in 2024. KFOC distributes educational resources and advocates for those with kidney disease. Results and Impact

Kidney Foundation of Canada reports that since KRESCENT’s founding in 2005, 90% of grantees are still working in kidney research. It also reports that three patents were registered by KRESCENT grantees.

While Ci highlights these key results, they may not completely represent Kidney Foundation of Canada’s results and impact.

Charity Intelligence has not yet rated KFOC on impact (n/r). This does not affect the star rating.

Finances

Kidney Foundation of Canada’s audited financial statements follow activity-based costing, a best practice. Its expenses are clearly defined between program, administrative, and fundraising categories.

In 2024 KFOC received $31.9m in donations. Administrative costs are 15% of revenues (excluding investment income). Fundraising costs are 49% of donations. This results in total overhead spending of 64%. For every dollar donated, 36 cents are available to go to the cause. This falls outside Ci’s reasonable range for overhead spending.

In 2024 KFOC spent $14.4m on its programs, which is 41% of its revenue. In 2024 it had a surplus of $74k.

KFOC has $28.4m in reserve funds (cash and investments). Excluding $5.3m in donor-endowed funds, the net funding reserves can cover 164%, or just under one year and eight months of program costs.

Kidney Foundation was featured in October 2024's CTV's W5 investigation into second-hand clothing bins where Canadians donate their used clothes to help charity. Kidney Foundation's donated clothing operations are held in a separate organization, Canadian Kidney Trustee Corporation. In 2024, Kidney Foundation Trust sold donated clothes for $4.5 million that were valued at $4.1 million. The surplus (profit) of $394k ($210k in 2023) goes to the charity, Kidney Foundation. This surplus/profit is 9% (5% in 2023) of the proceeds for donated clothes sales. This surplus is included in Kidney Foundation's net business activities.

This charity report is an update that has been sent for review to Kidney Foundation of Canada. Changes and edits may be forthcoming.

Comments & Contact

Comments added by the Charity:

The Kidney Foundation of Canada stands firm for the 4.1 million Canadian living with or at risk of kidney disease – no matter who they are, where they live, or where they are on their kidney journey. Developed through nationwide consultation, our new theory of change reflects the realities of kidney disease today and the urgent need for action.
This plan outlines how we will work to change the course of kidney disease over the next five years by:
  • Empowering people to take control of their kidney health and easing the burden of kidney disease through connection and support;
  • Breaking down the systemic barriers that delay, complicate, or limit equitable access to treatment and care;
  • Investing in research that leads to better prevention, earlier detection, and innovations in transplant and treatment.
In conjunction with our new plan, we are currently working to redefine how we measure and report our progress against these objectives. We look forward to sharing more information with our community in the coming months.
